Cat cat cat

Sometimes I think I adopted the only cat without exceptional reflexes and balance.  I grew up with a few cats in my home and all were capable of navigating the house without incident, save one unfortunate broken leg which we’ve always suspected came from a push and not a fall (I’m looking at you, sister!).  Isn’t it a requirement that cats always land on their feet and know instinctively how much area is necessary for them to move through a space?  Explain to me then, how Chris routinely misjudges how close he is to the corner of room and on one occasion tried to walk through a pair of unopened french doors.

Chris also seems to be blissfully unaware of his size when it comes to squeezing himself into a box, a cat bed or a in this case, a bowl.  The gold glass bowl on my coffee table was an item I thought would be a lovely accent in my living room.  I never considered that to a certain animal, it would also seem like the ideal place to take a nap.  For several weeks he has been closely examining the bowl; sniffing the edges, pawing at the interior.

Friday night he finally mustered up the courage to step in.  To say he is too large to fit in this bowl is an understatement.  Yet, like a chubby girl with good confidence in a department store fitting room, he curled himself up and made himself fit, his flesh spilling over the sides like a furry muffin top.

I’m aware I’m a crazy cat lady but I swear I could feel his satisfaction.  He’d been aiming for this for weeks and now he’d done it.  It was a triumph!  I admired his determination and his unfailing belief that he could fit anywhere in this world, space limitations be damned!

Needless to say, we were both feeling pretty proud and one of us probably overly sure of himself, as he attempted to vacate the bowl.  His exit was the farthest thing from smooth as the bowl tipped over and spilled him out, crashing back down as he galloped frantically out of the room.  Of course, dim as he is about his size, he probably thought he was gliding out, gracefully like a gazelle.  Bless his heart.
